Using the number of searches as a benchmark for the popularity of a brand, Starbucks is the clear winner. This is in contrast to the result of the poll that close to 300 people submitted their vote for.
The poll below shows that offered a choice, more people choose Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf over Starbucks. But the customer intent from online suggests otherwise, with many more people searching for Starbucks.
In terms of gross numbers, this set of statistics is a better representation of the popularity between Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Vs Starbucks.
Below are some other variables we can see from this set of stats comparing Starbucks and Coffee Bean and our take for an F&B brand to take note of.
In the set of stats above, regardless of locations, Starbucks has more physical locations compared to Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, but the level of offline presence is not a direct indicator of an online presence.
For example, if we look at Malaysia Coffee Bean Vs Starbucks stats:
If the online presence is tied to physical locations, then CBTL outlets that is roughly ⅓ compared to SB outlets, so it should have an online presence of roughly 60 to 70 K. But it registers a lot lesser than that.
The online presence is determined by the activity that you do as a brand.
In a separate test, we use our OCM brand and you can see how we market a food product online with Instagram posts (content marketing).
Singapore has more online activity compared to the Philippines and Malaysia
The activity in Singapore is again another confirmation of how online presence is determined by how we market to our audience. Singapore gross population is a lot smaller than the Philippines and Malaysia but the number of searches for Starbucks variance is not that wide (60 K). Do note that the Philippines and Malaysia have almost double the number of Starbucks outlets compared to Singapore.
This brings us to the next point that we want to bring out: Singapore has a much higher online activity compared to Malaysia and the Philippines.
In another sharing session, when we talked about the sustainability of online food delivery, these stats are again a booster that online food orders will not only continue but will grow in the coming years, regardless of the COVID situation.
