Penny university is located along East Coast Road, just next to Margarita’s. It’s great to know that more of such cafes are sprouting up in this foodie enclave. After I have my favourite prawn noodles or katong laksa or peranakan food, I can just chill out over a cuppa and cake nearby. Just love the juxtaposition of new and old shops in Joo Chiat. 

The industrial chic design makes the whole interior very cosy. My only gripe about this place is that it feels abit cramped. Amidst the nice setting, what really attracts me is the wide array of cakes. They pretty much have all sorts of flavours for the different tastebuds. I posted it to my facebook and within minutes, some from my facebook community were asking about the location of this cafe.

I could only stomach one cake, so I chose the salted caramel banana cake ($7). Is there a salted caramel trend going on? I saw different types of salted caramel pastries at most of the cafes that I visited lately. Anyway, the salted caramel cake is tasty but nothing extraordinary. The cake is too soft for my liking, while the sweetness is just right, I would prefer if they could be more generous with the salted caramel.

Their breakfast set is pretty decent. I had poached eggs toast ($7). Melted cheese with runny egg yolks is the potent combination. It’s delicious.

Penny University is also known for their coffee beans from local roasters. I tried their long black ($4.50). The coffee is good and aromatic. It leaves no bitter aftertaste and goes smoothly down the throat. I will be back.
