The Black and Decker DCM18S is a great single cup coffee maker to start with. It's inexpensive. It comes with its own permanent filter, so you won't have to worry about disposable paper filters.

You can use your own coffee grounds with it. It brews 15oz of coffee directly into a stainless steel travel mug, which comes with the unit. It automatically shuts off after brewing. Cleaning it is easy, since the travel mug, filter, filter basket are dishwasher-safe.
