Tucked in a corner of Paya Lebar Square, you might not know about this new restaurant if there were no signage. I caught sight of their sign near the Paya Lebar MRT station and decided to go there for lunch. For those of you who have not heard of them before, they have a sister outlet at Tampines Mall which features the same Peranakan food but uses a different dining concept. The one at Paya Lebar Square is a midscale full serviced restaurant.
From their website, it’s a restaurant that offers authentic Peranakan food at affordable prices. It is helmed by Chef Zan Ho, a third-generation genuine Peranakan, who learnt his craft from his mother.
O’nya Sayang has fairly simple décor with white as the main theme colour. Exquisite Peranakan items are proudly displayed along one of the walls too.
Back to the menu, the “Best of O’nya” set looked very attractive so we ordered that. It had Babi Pongteh, Beef Rendang, Nyonya Chap Chye, Assam Fish, Ayam Buah Keluak and Ngoh Hiang served with rice and Achar. During their opening promotion (ending 28 Feb 2015), they are also giving out 2 free desserts with every set purchased.
My conclusion is: this is a very value for money set. For those who want to introduce Peranakan food to your overseas guests, they get to try abit of everything in this set. For small eaters, this set should be enough for 3 pax as you might want to leave some space in your tummy for the desserts. My personal favourites for this set meal were the Assam fish and Babi Pongteh. My friend liked their Beef Rendang too.
The desserts were awesome!! I have not had such good Chendol for a long time. Everything was very fresh and the durian in my Chendol was very well done, not too thick nor too sweet. The taste went really well with the Chendol. My friend who had the Chendol with ice-cream also gave it the thumbs up. For those of you who like Chendol, I will recommend you to come and give them a try.
By the way, they have a tea time special where they serve you a cup of free coffee with every slice of cake purchased!! Their premium French cakes are from Le Gateau Maison.
